One concentrate bottle, about 27 to 28 ounces of water, and the ants stopped coming through my back door threshold. This has really fit the bill for me because it’s plant-based and I can use it around my kids and pets without second-guessing it.

The Ants Kept Coming Through My Back Door Threshold

BugMD Ant Killer concentrate bottle in extreme close-up, amber liquid and label in sharp focus

I’ve got a seal on my back door threshold and I still occasionally got ants coming through. That’s the exact problem I bought this ant killer to solve, and this has been awesome for it. I’m always looking for something eco-friendly I can use around my pets and my kids, and the BugMD Ant Killer and Bug Spray Concentrate really fit the bill. It’s a plant-based product, so it works really good for me and my family as well too.

I don’t know about you, but a sealed threshold that still lets ants in is one of those small home annoyances that never fully goes away. This one did.

What’s Actually in the Bottle

It’s a 3.7 oz concentrate that makes 32 oz of pest spray. That’s the entire bottle. The formula runs on plant oils like cottonseed oil and clove oil instead of harsh chemicals, which is the whole reason I picked it up. Per the label it kills some species in seconds and clears the rest within 30 minutes, and it’s rated safe on wood, carpet, and fabrics when used as directed.

Mixing It Up and Spraying the Threshold

Setup takes about a minute. I fill a spray bottle with roughly 27 to 28 ounces of water, mix the concentrate in, and then I spray it around my threshold. It does a phenomenal job keeping ants, mites, and roaches away from that threshold, and they just don’t come in. I also treat my garage with it, specifically around my front and back doors where you’ll sometimes get roaches or ants or mites or ticks.

The concentrate format also means I’m not buying a new can every few weeks. One 3.7 oz bottle fills a full 32 oz sprayer, and I’ve been stretching it across my back door threshold, two garage entry points, and the baseboards along my kitchen wall.

The Mixing Step You Can’t Skip

This isn’t a grab-and-spray can, and that’s the one catch worth knowing. You have to mix it yourself every time you refill: measure out about 27 to 28 ounces of water, add the concentrate, shake, and then spray. It’s not a deal-breaker for me, but if you were expecting to pop a cap and go, that’s not this. The concentrate format is what makes it affordable and long-lasting, but you’re trading a minute of prep for that.

Who This Ant Killer Actually Fits

Households with kids and pets, or anyone treating indoor door thresholds and garages, this fits because it’s plant-based and leaves no toxic residue around food prep areas. That’s the exact box it checked for me. If you get the odd ant line coming through a door threshold, or you treat a garage where roaches and mites turn up quite regularly, this handles it. If you want a plant-based spray you can use at a kitchen baseboard without clearing the room first, this is the one. Everything else I’ve tried in that category either smelled too strong to use indoors or took multiple applications before the ants stopped showing up.

Advice Before You Mix Your First Bottle

Read the package instructions before you dilute. The bottle lays out the essential steps for pest control, and getting the water ratio right (about 27 ounces of cold water) matters for how well it works. Keep a dedicated spray bottle so you’re not guessing at measurements each refill. And treat the spots that actually let bugs in: thresholds, baseboards, and door frames, not just random open floor. That’s where I’ve seen it do the most.

Pros

  • Kept ants, mites and roaches away from my back door threshold, and they just don’t come in
  • Plant-based formula I feel fine using around my kids and pets
  • One small concentrate bottle makes a full 32 oz of spray
  • Works for both indoor thresholds and garage/outdoor treatment

Cons

  • You have to mix and measure water into a spray bottle every refill
  • Not a ready-to-use can, so there’s a minute of prep before you spray

Frequently Asked Questions

Is BugMD ant killer safe to use around pets and kids?

Yes, that’s the main reason I use it. It’s a plant-based formula built on oils like cottonseed and clove instead of harsh chemicals, so I’m comfortable spraying it around my kids and pets when used as directed. Let sprayed surfaces dry as the label instructs.

How much water do I mix with the concentrate?

Add the concentrate to about 27 ounces of cold water in a spray bottle to make 32 oz of finished spray. I put roughly 27 to 28 ounces in, mix the concentrate, shake, and it’s ready to go.

Can I use it indoors and outdoors?

Both. I spray it around indoor thresholds and baseboards and also treat my garage and the areas around my front and back doors. The label covers bathrooms, kitchens, sheds, cabinets, and gardens too.

What pests does it actually target?

Ants, roaches, mites, ticks, spiders, moths and mosquitoes, among others. In my house it’s mostly been ants at the threshold plus the occasional roach or mite in the garage, and it kept them out.

How fast does it work?

Per the label it kills some species in seconds and eliminates all within 30 minutes. It’s an on-contact spray, so it works best when you hit the pests or the paths they use directly.

Does the mixed spray go bad or can I store it?

Keep the mixed spray in a dedicated bottle and shake it before each use since the oils can separate. Store it out of direct heat and away from kids and pets like any household product. I mix as I need it so it’s always fresh.

Will it stain wood, carpet or fabric?

It’s rated for use on wood, carpet, and fabrics per the label. As with any spray, test a small hidden spot first if you’re worried about a delicate surface, then treat the area normally.

Is one small bottle enough to be worth it?

For threshold and door treatment, yes, easily. One 3.7 oz concentrate fills a full 32 oz spray bottle, and I’ve treated my back door threshold, garage entry, and kitchen baseboards without burning through it fast. If you’re only hitting two or three spots regularly, this bottle will last you a while.

Loses a little for the mixing step, but the plant-based formula kept ants off my threshold and out of my garage, which is exactly what I needed. Skip it if you want a no-prep aerosol can. A pre-mixed ready-to-use version alongside the concentrate would push this to a five.
