Quick Verdict
Six weeks of pickleball wrist stiffness, ibuprofen I didn’t want to keep taking, and a topical that gives me a little bit of relief the moment the menthol hits. It’s lotion-like, absorbs without a greasy mess, and I use it two or three times a day, mostly right after I come off the court.
Buy if you:
- Play racket sports and get wrist stiffness from gripping
- Want a topical instead of popping ibuprofen or aspirin
- Get stiff knees as you get older and want a rub-in option
- Like a menthol-and-eucalyptus cooling feel
Skip if you:
- Hate an oily-feeling cream, it’s a little oily going on before it settles
- Expect deep, all-day pain elimination, this is mild relief
- Dislike menthol or eucalyptus scent on your skin

Pickleball Gave Me a Stiff Wrist. This Cream Was My Ibuprofen Alternative

I’ve been playing a lot of pickleball lately, plus a little handball and ping pong, and with that racket in my hand my wrist started aching. Stiff, more than anything else. I was taking ibuprofen but I really wanted something topical instead, so I did a lot of research and came across this Instant Hemp Cream. After six weeks of daily use on my pickleball wrist, I’m ready to tell you what actually works and what doesn’t.
Quick note on the search term “cream backdrop” that brought some of you here: if you were chasing a photography prop, this isn’t that. This is a joint and muscle rub. But if you landed here looking for a plant-based topical for stiffness, keep reading, because that’s exactly what I tested.
What’s Actually In the Tub
The base is hemp extract and hemp seed oil, with arnica, aloe, turmeric, MSM, hyaluronic acid, menthol, and eucalyptus on top of that. The menthol and eucalyptus are the ones you actually feel, everything else is background support. It’s a 2 oz tub, vegan and cruelty-free, and notably free of the synthetic fragrance you get in drugstore sports rubs.
The consistency looks like lotion. Feels like lotion too, maybe a touch oily going on. It doesn’t take a whole lot to cover an area, which matters when the tub is only 2 oz.
Rubbing It Into My Wrist After a Match
The menthol and eucalyptus hit almost immediately. I set the tub down, scooped a little, and worked it liberally into the stiff spot around my wrist. Within seconds I could feel that cooling menthol and eucalyptus, and I had a little bit of relief. That’s what I’m looking for more so than anything else.
I apply it two or three times a day, more so when I’m working out and right after I come off the court playing pickleball. If my wrist is stiff, I start working it in and take my time with it. I do the exact same thing on my knees. As I get older those get stiff too, so I concentrate around the knee and rub it in slow.
The smell is soothing, not overpowering. I can smell the eucalyptus and a little bit of the menthol as I rub it in, and it’s the kind of scent that reads as relief rather than a chemical sting.
It Goes On a Little Oily Before It Settles
Here’s the one thing worth a heads up: it’s a little bit of an oily consistency at first. The listing sells it as non-greasy and fast absorbing, and it does absorb, but in that first moment as I’m working it into my wrist or knee, it feels slightly oily on the skin before it settles in. It’s not a deal-breaker for me, and it does look and behave like lotion once it’s rubbed in. If you’re someone who can’t stand any slickness on your hands though, you’ll notice it in those first few seconds.

Who This Is Actually For
This is a post-activity cream, not a round-the-clock painkiller. I reach for it right after I come off the pickleball court, when my wrist is freshly stiff and I want something faster than waiting for ibuprofen to kick in. If that’s your window, 20 minutes after a match, two or three times a day, it fits cleanly. If you need all-day cover for chronic pain, it won’t hold up that long.
It also works for the getting-older crowd dealing with stiff knees. I use it the same way on my knees as I do my wrist, and it does the same job. Anyone who prefers a plant-based, hemp-based option over chemical creams will like the ingredient list here too.
Hemp Cream Versus Just Taking Ibuprofen
Ibuprofen reaches systemic pain; this cream handles localized, activity-triggered stiffness only. I started on ibuprofen and it worked, but I didn’t want to keep swallowing aspirins and ibuprofen for everyday stiffness. That’s the whole reason I went topical. This cream gives me localized, cooling relief right where I rub it, and I’d rather do that than take something systemic for a stiff wrist. If your pain is serious and constant, a pill may still do more. For mild, activity-driven stiffness, I’d reach for the cream first.
Advice Before You Buy It
Use less than you think. It doesn’t take a whole lot to cover a wrist or a knee, and the tub is only 2 oz, so a heavy hand will burn through it fast. Work it in slow and liberally over the actual sore spot rather than smearing a thin layer everywhere.

Time it around your activity. I get the most out of it applying right after I come off the court, when the stiffness is fresh. And go in expecting a little bit of relief and reduced stiffness, not a miracle. That’s what I got, and it’s what kept me using it.
Pros
- Menthol and eucalyptus cooling relief kicks in within seconds of rubbing it in
- Lotion-like texture that absorbs and looks like regular lotion once worked in
- A little goes a long way, so a 2 oz tub isn’t as small as it sounds
- Hemp extract and hemp seed oil base with arnica, aloe, turmeric, plant-based and vegan
- A real topical alternative to popping ibuprofen for everyday stiffness
Cons
- Feels a little oily on the skin in the first few seconds before it settles
- Relief is mild, it reduces stiffness rather than eliminating deeper pain
- Menthol and eucalyptus scent won’t be for everyone
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the hemp cream contain CBD or THC?
The label lists hemp extract and hemp seed oil, not CBD or THC content. It’s a plant-based topical marketed for muscle and joint comfort, so treat it as a hemp-based rub rather than a cannabinoid product, and check the current listing if that detail matters to you.
Will it stain or leave residue on my clothes?
The listing states it won’t stain clothes or leave sticky residue once absorbed. In my use it does feel slightly oily going on, so I let it sink in for a minute before pulling a sleeve back over my wrist.
How often can I apply it?
I apply it two or three times a day, mostly around my workouts and after playing. It’s designed for daily use on sensitive skin, so working it into a sore spot a few times a day is normal for how I use it.
Can I use it on more than my wrist and knees?
Yes. The listing covers back, neck, knees, shoulders, elbows, and wrists. I’ve used it on my wrist and knees, but the formula is meant for all-around use on active bodies, so other joints and muscle areas are fair game.
Is it safe for sensitive skin?
It’s marketed as fragrance-free of harsh additives and crafted for sensitive skin, vegan and cruelty-free. That said, it does contain menthol and eucalyptus, which give a cooling tingle, so patch-test a small area first if your skin reacts to those.
How long does a 2 oz tub last?
It depends on how many spots you treat, but a little goes a long way. Applying to my wrist and knees a couple times a day, a small scoop covers each area, so I’m not burning through it as fast as the small size suggests.
Is it better than a menthol-only sports gel?
A straight menthol gel will hit harder and faster, that cold blast is more intense when it’s the only thing in the formula. This cream trades some of that punch for a fuller ingredient list: hemp, arnica, aloe, turmeric layered under the menthol and eucalyptus. If you want maximum cooling shock, grab a gel. If you want a plant-based rub you can work into a joint slowly and not feel like you’re applying an ice pack, this wins that comparison.
Can I use it before a workout, not just after?
Yes, the listing pitches it for pre- and post-activity use. I mostly apply after coming off the court, but rubbing it into a stiff area before you play is reasonable too since it absorbs quickly and doesn’t feel heavy.
